It’s important to us that you know exactly what your new smile will look like on you before we begin work on your teeth. That’s why we create a beautiful set of temporary veneers for you to try on before we even schedule an appointment to prepare your teeth. This gives you a chance to “test-drive” your veneers and allows us to make any needed changes to your smile design before your permanent veneers are crafted. In this way, we work closely with you to create a design that you love and ensure that you’re equally enamored with your smile at your final try-in. And if for any reason you don’t absolutely love your finished smile, we will make any necessary adjustments before permanently bonding your veneers. That’s our beautiful smile guarantee.

Conservative Smile Makeovers

A smile makeover with porcelain veneers is a conservative cosmetic treatment. Preparing your teeth for veneers, when that is required by your case, involves only a thin layer of enamel being shaved from the surface of each tooth. This allows the edge of the veneer to rest evenly with the tooth, creating a seamless margin between the two, as shown in the diagram at right. At Mountain View, when preparation is required, we do minimal tooth preparation, shaving no more than the thickness of a fingernail (about 0.3 mm) from each tooth. Treatment with veneers requires far less removal of tooth structure than treatment with crowns.

Porcelain Veneers: Our Process

Step 1: Exam & Records

At your first appointment, your dentist will check to make sure your teeth and gums are healthy. We’ll also take x-rays and digital impressions of your smile to give us the information we need to begin designing your new smile. If everything looks good, your next visit will be a smile design consultation.

Step 2: Smile Design

At your consultation, we’ll want to hear from you about your vision for your new smile. If you’d like, bring photos that represent your ideal smile. Based on your unique facial aesthetics, your dentist will share his recommendations at this time, too. Together, the two of you will land on a smile design. Using a wax model of your teeth, your dentist will show you what your newly designed smile will look like, tweaking the design as needed until you love it. Then, we’ll make you a set of temporary veneers so you can see what your smile looks like on you! When you’re absolutely overjoyed with your new smile, we’ll schedule an appointment to prepare your teeth for veneer placement.

Step 3: Tooth Preparation

This visit is all about getting your teeth ready for veneers. If tooth preparation is required, your dentist will gently shave a small margin (about 0.3 mm) off the surface of the enamel of each tooth. We’ll then take digital impressions of your prepared teeth and send them to our master ceramist, who will begin crafting your veneers from beautiful porcelain. When your finished veneers are ready, we’ll set an appointment for you to have them placed. In the meantime, you’ll want to maintain diligent dental hygiene. Brush often, as prepared teeth are more susceptible to staining, and floss nightly to keep your gums healthy for veneer placement.

Step 4: Try-In & Bonding

Your final appointment is when your vision becomes a reality. Your dentist will place your porcelain veneers with a special temporary paste so you can try them on. By this time, you’ll have partnered with your dentist to create a beautiful design, seen a wax mock-up of your smile, and tried on a temporary set of veneers. You’ll have fallen in love with your new smile. Knowing this, we’ll all eagerly await your joyous reaction when you see your finished veneers on you for the first time. Should any unforeseen issues arise, we’ll resolve them, even if it requires having our ceramist completely remake them. And when you absolutely love your new smile, your dentist will apply a bonding agent to make it permanent. Your smile journey will have reached its beautiful conclusion!

How Long Do Porcelain Veneers Last?

Quality porcelain veneers can last 10-20 years or more. You can help extend the life of your porcelain veneers by taking excellent care of them. Maintaining good oral hygiene goes a long way in protecting your veneers, as it keeps them clean and protects the underlying teeth. So, continue following the general principles of oral hygiene, including:

• Brush and floss regularly
• Limit snacking (as it leads to more tooth decay than any other factor)
• Consider using an electric toothbrush

Your veneers will also need special care to keep them from getting scratched or otherwise damaged. Follow these care instructions to protect your veneers:

• Use the nightguard we provide you to prevent damage from possible night grinding
• Use a non-abrasive toothpaste (like Supersmile)
• Use mouthwash that does not contain alcohol
• Do not bite metal objects
• Wear a mouthguard when playing contact sports
• Avoid consuming alcohol excessively
