Mercury-Free Dentistry

If you don’t love the idea of mercury in your mouth, you’re not alone. Many patients feel uneasy about mercury amalgam fillings, even though the American Dental Association states that they are safe. These fillings, commonly known as “silver fillings,” are made of a combination of metals that contains about 50% mercury.

Patient concern over mercury is one of many reasons we choose to provide only composite fillings, never amalgams. Here are some other great reasons:

Preservation

Placing a composite filling requires less drilling than placing an amalgam. This means that composite fillings preserve more of your natural tooth structure, making them a more conservative treatment than amalgams.

Strength

Composite fillings are placed with a technique that bonds to the tooth, but amalgams just sit in the tooth. So, while amalgam itself is a stronger material, it actually weakens the tooth and makes it more susceptible to fracture. Composite, however, will strengthen the tooth.

Aesthetics

Perhaps the most obvious benefit of composite fillings is that they look natural, quite unlike amalgams. Composites are tooth-colored and blend in well with your smile.

Sanitary Amalgam Removal

Perhaps you’re concerned about the amalgams you already have and would like to have them removed. If so, we can help. We’ll carefully remove them using an isolation technique and high volume suction, to protect against the inhalation or ingestion of mercury particles. And then we’ll replace them with natural-looking white composite fillings. The photos below show the aesthetic difference this makes.

Metal-Free Dentistry

In addition to metal-free fillings, we offer metal-free crowns. The type of crown we’ll use depends on the tooth being restored. For a front tooth, we’ll use a brand of crown called e.max, which is made with a core of lithium disilicate, a strong ceramic, overlaid in porcelain. The porcelain overlay gives the tooth a beautiful, completely natural look by mimicking the properties of a real tooth: translucency, color variation, and light reflectivity.

For a back tooth, we’ll use a crown that can withstand greater pressure. A metal-free option that is well-suited for this task is a zirconia crown. Zirconia is exceptionally strong, and its tooth-colored appearance will blend in with your surrounding teeth.

We also offer gold and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, though we don’t use them nearly as often as e.max and zirconia. Letting us know your metal-free preference will ensure that we recommend the crown that is best for you. To learn more about our options, visit our Porcelain Crowns page.
