Our Process

The gold standard of denture design is a robust process that involves detailed measurement and advanced bite calibration to ensure a precise fit. To produce cheaper dentures, some dentists shortcut this procedure. At Mountain View Family Dental, we follow every step of the process to bring you dentures of the highest quality.

Step 1: Impressions

We begin by taking three physical impressions of your dental arches. From the first impression, we create models of the arches, which we then use to create special trays for use in capturing the subsequent, more detailed impressions. By using custom-fitted trays, we ensure the most precise results.

The second impression records the boundaries of each arch, and the final impression picks up all of the fine details. This process results in a highly accurate representation of your arches, which we’ll use to create plaster models on which your dentures will be constructed.

Step 2: Vertical Dimension

Our next step is to determine the appropriate height for your dentures. The proper height is the vertical distance at which your upper and lower jaws rest for optimal comfort and function. This is an important step, as an incorrect vertical dimension can cause problems such as jaw strain, speech problems, or a shrunken facial appearance.

To establish the proper vertical dimension, Ben will create wax rims attach them to acrylic baseplates. Then he will adjust them by adding wax or shaving it down as he assesses your comfort, speech, and jaw function. He continues this process until he’s arrived at the optimal height for your dentures.

Step 3: Bite Calibration

At this time, we’ll also take measurements of your jaw position and transfer them to an instrument called an articulator, which simulates your jaw movement. This visual representation gives us the information we need to ensure your dentures provide proper occlusion, or a balanced bite.

Step 4: Denture Try-In

Next, we set your denture teeth in wax to create trial dentures. You’ll try these on, and we’ll make sure they fit comfortably and promote optimal speech, occlusion, and jaw function. Setting the teeth in wax allows us to make adjustments as needed until fit and function are ideal.

Step 5: Your New Dentures

When everything is just right, we’ll create your permanent dentures!

Stabilizing Your Denture

A quality denture will fit well. But even the best-fitting denture is subject to some movement. You will probably notice more sliding of your lower denture because it isn’t generally held in place by suction like the upper denture.
