Future Quality of Life

Implant-supported dentures protect your quality of life in the future by preventing bone resorption and facial collapse. When teeth are missing, the jawbone that supported them begins to break down, or resorb, so that the minerals can serve another useful purpose in the body. Over time, this causes jawbone shrinkage, which can impact your quality of life in a couple of different ways.

One way jawbone shrinkage can affect you is through facial collapse. The jaw supports your facial structure, so as it degrades, your facial height shrinks. In advanced stages, this will cause your face to appear shrunken and aged.

Jawbone shrinkage also creates a problem with denture fit, as the bone is needed to retain the denture. As the bone quantity lowers, the space for the denture to move around increases, and it doesn’t fit properly. Eating and speaking with an ill-fitting denture is difficult and uncomfortable.

The presence of dental implants in your jawbone is perceived by your body as a signal that the bone is still needed. Therefore, it prevents facial collapse. Facial height is maintained, and you have a secure set of teeth!

Implant Overdentures

Implant overdentures are like traditional dentures stabilized by dental implants. The denture teeth and gums are attached to the implants via snaps, making them easily removable at night for cleaning.

Fixed Implant Dentures

Fixed implant dentures, also known as hybrid dentures, are screwed into the implants embedded in the jaw. This gives them the secure feel of natural teeth.

Mini Implants

Smaller than traditional dental implants, mini implants can provide cost savings and allow for minimally invasive surgery. Because their smaller size limits the weight that they can hold, mini implants are not suitable for every denture and may not last as long as traditional dental implants.

Budget-Friendly Options

The implant overdenture is less expensive than the fixed implant denture. For further savings, we can retain the overdenture with as few as two implants. While not as secure as using four or six implants, it gives much more stability than a removable denture and will prevent facial collapse.

Options When Bone Quantity is Limited

If your jawbone has already undergone some resorption, you may be concerned whether there is enough available bone quantity for implant placement. We offer two options to help you when bone quantity is low. The first is guided bone regeneration, a grafting process that promotes bone regrowth. We perform this procedure in our office. The second option is placing the implants at strategic angles so that they can be supported by the bone that you have. This is called the All-on-4 technique.

Your Path to Implant-Supported Dentures

When you’re ready for implant-supported dentures, your first step will be an oral exam, complete with x-rays and a CBCT scan. The scan plays a critical role in determining safe and proper implant placement, as it gives us a 3D view of your jaws, mouth, and nasal cavity, including the locations of critical nerves. We’ll also take digital impressions of your jaws to fit you for your dentures.

The next step is your implant surgery, which may take place in our office or with another trusted oral surgeon. For your comfort, we offer sedation options. After surgery, we’ll give you a temporary denture to wear while we allow a few months for healing and osseointegration, the process in which the implants fuse to your jawbone. Once this is complete, we’ll attach your finished dentures, and you can enjoy renewed comfort and stability!
