Mesa Dental Anxiety

“Extremely kind, intelligent, attentive, and funny people here. I have severe dental anxiety from past childhood trauma, and they treated me like an actual human being and accommodated anything I needed to help me feel comfortable in my experience here.” — Jillian Gerhart

If you have dental anxiety, we understand and will help you. At Mountain View Family Dental, all of our dentists offer conscious sedation and are dedicated to providing gentle, comfortable, compassionate care.

You’re Not Alone if You Have Dental Anxiety

“I have an extreme fear of the dentist, and everyone has treated me kindly and professionally from the start. It can feel overwhelming and embarrassing to have a fear of the dentist, but they never let you feel that way here.” — Molly Weikart

According to a research study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association, a striking 72.6% of adults reported having dental anxiety, and 26.8% indicated that theirs was severe. If you are one of the 72.6%, you are not alone. We have had the pleasure of serving many anxious patients, and we have the tools and experience to help you, too. Our most powerful tool is conscious sedation.

Conscious Sedation for Dental Anxiety

Under conscious sedation, you can receive treatment in blissful peace and comfort. You’ll likely feel like you’ve been asleep for your entire appointment, and won’t remember the details of your visit later. But unlike being under general anesthesia, you’ll remain fully responsive the whole time, with all of your vital reflexes unimpaired. You can learn more about our oral and IV sedation options on our Sedation Dentist page.

Our Gentle Approach

For milder levels of dental anxiety, nitrous oxide is an excellent mild sedative. This gas takes effect immediately at the beginning of the appointment, and at the end can be reversed just as quickly, so you can go about the rest of your day unimpaired. If you have trouble getting numb or staying numb, nitrous oxide can be your answer.

Our Gentle Approach

“I was very impressed that the staff went into details explaining what they were going to do, how I was going to feel and expectations from my visit. In my opinion; they went well over and above to make sure that I was comfortable and that my visit would be positive and successful. I’m going on 57 years old, I would say this is the first time I’ve been to the dentist office where I did not feel any pain whatsoever.” — Michael Froehlich

Your comfort is a priority to us. We take care to explain procedures to you ahead of time so you know what to expect. We use pre-numbing agents to minimize pain when injecting novocain. And we don’t move forward with treatment until we are sure you are comfortable. Our patients frequently comment on our gentle, compassionate manner.

What If I Have Trouble Getting Numb?

Difficulty getting numb is common among anxious patients because anxiety can actually inhibit the efficacy of numbing agents. If novocain doesn’t work well for you or wears off too quickly, let us know. We can provide nitrous oxide to reduce your anxiety so the novocain will work properly.
