A high percentage of those who do have this anxiety attribute it to something traumatic they experienced at the dentist's office when they were very young.   It may have been caused by a dentist who didn't have nitrous oxide or some other type of sedation, or who was insensitive to the fear that many kids have about dental appointments.

Regardless of where the fear starts, it can cause serious problems down the road. It can prevent someone from seeking dental care for many years at a time as they get older.
